~Mittens~

I start out our Mitten Theme by reading the book The Three Little Kittens. We talk about the differences of a cat and kitten. We make a list of pets we have at home. Students then match the pet picture to the correct word on our list. (Google images).

We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and do
a variety of different activities!

We make our own version of The Mitten!
The ________ got in the mitten.

We review the characters in the story!

We retell the story of The Mitten using
laced mittens and paper characters!

We graph how many of our friends wear gloves or mittens to school.

We have a snowball fight! I write numbers on paper...we crumple them up and throw them around. When I blow my whistle...the students find a snowball, open it up, and read the number!

My poor little kitten lost her mitten
And started to cry, boo-hoo.
So I helped my kitten to look for her mitten.
Her beautiful mitten of BLUE.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my mother's bed.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored RED.
I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under my father's pillow.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored YELLOW.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
On the hand of my brother's toy clown.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored BROWN.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the laundry so clean.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored GREEN.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Inside a grocery bag.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored BLACK.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the kitchen sink.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored PINK.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Under the kitchen sink.
But, alas, the mitten was not the right mitten,
For it was colored PINK.

I found a mitten just right for a kitten
Inside my favorite shoe.
And this time the mitten was just the right mitten,
For it was colored BLUE!

We use mittens to act out story problems! We measure with mittens!

Students match mittens: capital/lowercase at the ABC Center.

We make mittens at the Art Center!

We decorate our hallway with our mittens!

We make a take home book titled Where Are My Mittens. This book works on positional words.
My mittens are on my  bed.
My mittens are under my bear.
My mittens are on top of my dresser.

We make snow ice cream! Using shredded ice,
vanilla, and condensed sweetened milk!

We decorate our classroom door for winter!
In the middle of each snowflake is a students face!

We make snowflakes! These snowflakes decorate our classroom through the winter months. SO CUTE!

To begin our study on the season winter I show the students
a mystery bag! Inside the bag I have numerous items that
belong on a snowman (carrot, hat, sticks, buttons)! Students
have to guess what items are inside by asking questions!
Example: Is it round? Is it long? What can I do with it?

We make a list of words that rhyme with "man" like in snowman.
